This post is essentially my personal take on the perfect Pittsburgh foodie gift guide. I'm aptly naming it "Blake's Favorite Things" (brilliant, I know). Keep reading to check out the deets for our first giveaway in a while!

The 40-foot rubber duck tediously made his way down the Ohio River and into our hearts on Friday afternoon. He was greeted by the thousands of eager Pittsburghers (present company included) who lined the riverbanks and bridges like pre-teens at a Beatles concert.

After posting a few photos on Facebook, I noticed a fairly sizable divide in the reception of this little, er... enormous fellow. Many are skeptical and confused at why in the world a giant rubber duck warrants such a spectacle. Sarcastic hashtags such as #whotheduckcares and #whogivesaduck abound.

At the festival, a friend of ours even overheard what I can only assume to be an incredibly religious couple angrily state "It's a disgrace, the way they're all worshiping it like a false God."

My response to those people had I been close enough to give one? Um no. There is no worshiping. We're all simply watching and scratching our heads and coming together to enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity. No candles were lit, no prayers were said at its non-existent feet. It's just plain fun.

So "Who cares?" I do. I care a lot. And not just because I happen to have an affinity to ducks.

Because this is Pittsburgh. We were the first US city to receive this ridiculously hilarious global phenomenon. We can't even get on Britney Spears' tour schedule, but we got the duck. That's a pretty big duckin' deal, I'd say. Pittsburgh is gaining some serious ground as a cool place to live, work and visit these days and I'm proud to be here to witness it unfold. We made national lists. We knit a bridge.

Heck, the Pirates are even rounding out a winning season. IT'S ALL COMING TOGETHER FOR US!

So while yes, it may be a little odd that we're all so darn excited about a giant rubber ducky floating down a river, its what the duck symbolizes that's really so exciting. We are going places. We are proud. We are Pittsburgh.

HA.

People, I apologize. Wedding planning and wedding dieting are not necessarily conducive to free time to write or free calories to consume.

But FEAR THEE NOT. I have a few reviews stored and ready to go to keep your taste buds informed.

One of those is one that I've been excited to post for some time. Sammies from Gaucho in the Strip!

Gaucho is not your typical restaurant. It's a takeout joint. You come in, you "ooh" and "ahhhh" at the enormous amount of character that's accomplished in such a tiny area (the cuteness-per-square-inch ratio is phenomenal), you order, you GTFU.

There is an adorable little patio adjacent where you can eat outside, but mostly you just want to take these sammies to a (very) private place and indulge because THIS reaction is fairly imminent:

I ordered a Matambre (Flank Steak Sammie) and as I turned to head out and claim a seat under an umbrella, I spotted a Lazy Susan stocked with robust salsas. Four different kinds, all emitting their own unique, rustic aroma and all looking magnificently homemade. They were (in no order because i completely forget which was which...) a Chimmi Churri (traditional herbs and garlic), Pimenton (pepper and herbs), Ajo (roasted garlic) and Cebolla (carmelized onion). Obviously I had to try all four.

When my sammie was delivered to me (in a glowing halo of light with angels singing somewhere off in the distance), I could already tell it was going to be good. The ciabatta bread was the perfect PANTONE 18-0940 and the oils from the grilled veggies and meat were being soaked in to just the perfect depth.

The meat was juicy and succulent. Easy to rip into with one bite, but not remotely brittle. I took a piece out of the sammie to eat with my fingers (like a true lady) and it was like I was eating candy. Delicious, cow-meat candy. It melted in my mouth and left a nice peppery aftertaste which did nothing but make me want more.

And those veggies. MY GOD. Those veggies. They were charred to perfection, the flavor was out of this world. They were the perfect complement to the steak.
Nope. There are four stools inside and a few tables outside, so come WAY before or well after noon to snag a seat at lunchtime.

Overall Opinion:
What I'm saying is, you gotta go here. You just gotta. Lunch break? Saturday in the strip? A nice quick dinner before a night on the town? It's a necessity. Bring your friends, but make sure you butt in front of them in line so you can order first. It's the best steak sammie I've ever had the privilege of putting in my mouth. They've got small plates that also look amazing and I cannot wait to go back and give them a try.
Shiloh)Sundays in our household have recently evolved from "that dreaded day before Monday" to "that AWESOME day we get to have BRUNCH!"

A few F.O.R.T.S and I have started something of a Brunch Club here in the 'burgh and we're making really great headway. Yesterday, we headed to the tippy top of Mt. Washington to check out the brunch buffet at Shiloh Grill.

It such was a beyond gorgeous day, I could see Blawnox from the Overlook.

But, in all honesty, I wasn't there for the views. I was there for the booze.

To me, brunch is accurately defined by its combination of breakfast and lunch options... but not without alcoholic breakfast themed beverages. My a.m. alcohol of choice comes in the form of a Bloody Mary. And they do 'em right at Shiloh. You have your choice of the Bloody we all know and love, or the Bacon & Egg Bloody which comes with a poached egg and - you guessed it - bacon. Right there in the drink. It's a meal in itself! I took the cowardly road and went with a classic Bloody which was robust and flavorful, fairly spicy, and definitely strong.

Bloody Mary

Your first Bloody Mary or frozen Mimosa, which I've heard is quite refreshing (I wouldn't know... oranges and all), is included in the $14 brunch price. After that, all Bloodies are 1/2 off on Sundays! How morbidly phenomenal!

After we took a few sips, we went upstairs to check out the scene. A small room held a few stations of cold apps (salmon & cream cheese, fruit & veggies), bread options (bagels, muffins & croissants), hot yummies (breakfast & lunch options alike) and an omlete station. I tried to go for an array...

Waffle with raspberry compote, locks and cream cheese, sausage gravy & biscuit

Mac & Cheese, Ham BBQ Slider, bacon

I was beyond satisfied with my meal! The Mac and Cheese was by far the shining star of both plates. They use big noodles which were cooked just past al dente and a variety of cheeses (I definitely tasted white cheddar in there...). The Ham BBQ slider came with a kick from the jalepeno cole slaw. My sausage gravy was certainly unique. It tasted a bit more herb-y than I'm used to and was definitely very creamy. I loved it! And the bacon... well the bacon. Crisped to perfection, a great thickness. It didn't really taste like it came from a chaffing dish at all.

The entire Brunch buffet will cost you $14 and that includes your first Bloody or Mimosa!
This month, quite possibly the best AND worst thing that has ever happened, happened. A TCBY opened less then a mile down the street from my house.

LESS THAN A MILE.

This is PHENOMENAL for my taste buds. They will be singing songs of great joy for years to come! However, this is not so great news for my diet and my wallet. Oh well. They're going to have to deal with it.
Every once in a blue moon, PID and I like to cross the bridge and have lunch together. A few weeks back, it was his turn to choose and, after he picked me up like a true gentleman, he whisked me away to Salem's Grill in the Strip District.

Salem's had impressed me at many local foodie expos like GoodTaste!
Pittsburgh and Farm to Table, so it was about time I checked them out in
person. It was impossible to miss. Standing out from the crowd in the blander-section of Penn Avenue with it's hyper-colored brick walls and it's motivational graffiti.

We stepped in to a frigid cafeteria (there's no permanent heat at Salem's and it was a nippy April afternoon) and were smacked in the face with the mouth-watering smell of Middle Eastern cuisine.

As I stepped up to the counter, I was overwhelmed in the best possible way. So many meats to choose from. So. Many Meats. The best possible problem to have.

PID and I filled our plates to the brim and I added some Spanikopita for the road.

I chose a combination of Lamb Chops and Tandoori Chicken, served with chick peas and Jasmine rice. Basically, I scarfed it down in .5 seconds and immediately wanted more. Shocker? My chickpeas were the best part of my meal.

Lamb Chops & Tandoori Chicken Combination - $8.99

PID went with the Tikki Masala and loved the insane combination of flavors and spices with the cool yogurt kick.

Tikki Masala Platter - $6.99

The Spanikopita was tough for me as I'm used to the Greek version. It was very earthy and slightly less creamy. I wouldn't get it again, but that's just because of my premonitions.

I'm taking a break from wedding planning to pick up where I left off with my eating habits. PID and I recently went out to dinner with one of our groomsmen and his lovely wife, who are both Pescatarians. With the Gluten-free and vegetarian options available at Kaleidoscope Cafe in Lawrenceville and the good things we'd all heard, we made reservations without hesitations.

We were seated right away and immediately attended to, though the service in the tiny, 10-table establishment was touch-and-go throughout the rest of the evening.

Kaleidoscope is BYOB, which, to me, is a wonderful feature. It's such a blessing to be able to choose the EXACT wine (or, in PID and his g-man's case, locally brewed beer) you want and not pay a fortune.

Don't judge me. The Yellow Tail was affordable and available. And delicious, for that matter.

Kaleidoscope charges stem fee as opposed to a cork fee, so you can drink as many damn bottles as you want. And so we did. And the meal went fairly darn well from there...

Deep Fried Gnocchi small plate w/ homemade marinara - $7

We all started with the fried Gnocchi appetizer. The homemade marinara
was outstanding. I didn't fall in love with the Gnocchi, but I've sort
of always found that dish to be one-note. G-man liked it so much, he
ordered the larger version for his meal!

Gnocchi Nirvana - $14

Lady G went with the scallops and farfalle pasta in a brown butter
sauce. Her scallops were cooked wonderfully, with just a hint of a
sear.

Scallops Buerre Noisette - $18

PID made a statement by being the only one to order meat at the table.
He went with the, aptly named, Cow Jumped Over the Blue Moon Pasta,
which roughly translates to sliced beef over a gorgonzola (SQUEE!)
pasta. I'll leave you with this: I ate half his pasta. Not because he
didn't want it, but because my fork was quicker than his eye. The beef
was ever so slightly tough, but the creaminess of the pasta sauce helped wash it down.

The Cow Jumped Over the Blue Moon Pasta - $16

I've saved the best (my meal) for last. The Basa was OUT
OF THIS WORLD. A perfectly buttery, flaky fish, it would have stood out
on its own. But add a lobster bean puree and bacon greens? Holy moly.
You've hooked me. I would recommend this dish to ANY hungry diner,
pescatarian or no.
Overall Opinion:
With only a few minor service blips and a stellar meal, I'd have to say this place is worth a return trip. My fish was some of the best I've had in Pittsburgh. If you're looking for an intimate, BYOB establishment in a neighborhood that offers a plethora of post-meal hot spots, Kaleidoscope is your place! If you're a vegetarian or looking for Gluten-free options, this is DEFINITELY your place. Pittsburgh Magazine once called Kaleidoscope Pittsburgh's "Best Kept Secret" - and, though I wish I could keep it that way, I feel obligated to out it as the little restaurant that could. Bringing color and light to the Pittsburgh dining scene. So head out to Lville and give Kaleidoscope a spin. You'll be glad that you did.
Hey 'burghers! Have you missed me? I've been out doing all sorts of wedding-y things. Checking out venues, photographers, DJs, florists and, of course, CATERERS. The good part? There are SO many fabulous and amazing caterers to choose from in the city of Pittsburgh. The bad part? There are SO many fabulous and amazing caterers to choose from in the city of Pittsburgh! It's making our job really, REALLY tough. Talk about stressful!

Today, we actually went in an ever so slightly different direction and had our very first tasting at the one and only SAVOY in Pittsburgh's Strip District.

Though PID and I had both tried Savoy's tasty dishes at events around the city, but we'd never eaten here, so we were very excited! As soon as we walked in, rumors of the city-lounge feel were immediately confirmed. The place was impeccably decorated.

I'll tell you something right off the bat: if you're a fan of "down home" restaurants conceptualized from a mom-and-pop mindset, you just plain won't feel comfortable here. We spoke to Chef Watson for quite sometime and he explained that Savoy was designed to be an "experience" for Pittsburghers - one we really haven't had in our city to date.

When we sat down to meet with Chef to talk about catering our wedding, he was a complete delight. He talks about food with such passion that it became instantly contagious. I wanted my wedding to be TOMORROW! Our first tasting was a current menu item, Beef Two Ways.

Beef, Two Ways (typically served with larger portion sizes with haricot vert for $30)

The beef on the left is a cube of sous vide brisket on cauliflower silk, and the right is sliced filet served over a bed of compressed (local!) mushrooms. On the menu, its served with haricot vert for $30. We each took one bite and were in heaven. The brisket was so tender and moist and we didn't even need a knife to cut it. It simply fell apart in the best possible way. The mushrooms and bistro steak were also incredible.

We also tried a sampling of the Chicken Marsala (also made with local mushrooms) and were equally floored - especially for such a common meal.

When it came time to eat our official meal, we asked Chef what he would recommend. He told us a story of how he personally travels to the local farms where he gets his ingredients. One of his favorite experiences was traveling to Elysian Fields Farms where he sources his lamb. He hauled bails of hay and did his fair share of the farm-work for the day so he could experience, first-hand, the how the sheep feed and live and trust that he's getting the best quality product.

Lamb Chops served with Spinach Risotto - $38

So, of course, I ordered the lamb chops. The meat was cooked phenomenally. Some of the best lamb I've had. The mint demi glaze really helped make the dish. The mint was subtle enough that it didn't overpower the rest of the ingredients, but strong enough that it perfectly complemented the gameyness of the lamb. Shockingly enough, though, I was equally as excited about the flawlessly-executed spinach risotto and glazed carrots on the plate. All-in-all, it was an outstanding meal.

PID has been dreaming about Savoy's ribs since last year's Savor Pittsburgh, so - although he toyed briefly with the idea of getting one of the more unique dishes on the menu - he ultimately went with the ribs and mac & cheese as his meal. The ribs fell of the bone as they should and PID was pleased that they were just how he remembered them. Deliciously messy and full of flavor. The mac & cheese were gooey and delectible, too.
Overall Opinion:
Overall, we had a great tasting experience AND dinner experience, all rolled into one. Chef Watson is an incredible man who deserves every ounce of the growing respect Savoy has been seeing over the past two years in business. Just as he'd hoped, its a unique - and needed - Pittsburgh experience that just happens to also serve seriously kick-ass food. It's comfort food, elevated to an entirely new level. We still have a lot more tastings to do, but we're certainly happy we started here! We'll be back for dinner (possibly many, many times...) and we'll definitely consider it for privately hosted parties, as their upstairs and outdoor space were gorgeous. If you're looking for that little something extra that you feel like you can find in cities OTHER than Pittsburgh, Savoy is your place. But, appropriately so, it adds in its Pittsburgh charm by using local ingredients. We love this place. Give it a try.

QUICK WARNING: They do have a dress code. I felt slightly under-dressed in jeans and a cardigan. They wouldn't make you leave for that, but make sure those toes aren't exposed!
Tomorrow night from 9 p.m. - 2 a.m. PGH Party will be hosting a party at Remedy Lounge on Butler Street to celebrate and support the Lawrenceville Farmer's Market, entering into its third season in June. It's called Grown in Lawrenceville, and it's going to be great.

I'm a huge fan of local farmer's markets and this one is as good as it gets. With new, local farms signing on every year, they're growing in more ways than one.

So if you're looking for a fun Friday activity, join TOP for a night out on the town. See ya there!

St. Paddy's is over, and - while most of us are moving on - there are a select few (ahem, like me) who want nothing more than to cling tightly to the memory of the guilt-free weekend full of debauchery and overindulgence that lay behind us.

Well, folks, I aims to please.

Though I should have posted this recipe BEFORE the holiday weekend, I just plain didn't. For that, I am sorry, but bookmark this page for next year (or your next party) and you'll be all set!

Below is my super-secret recipe that I'm sharing with y'all for my semi-famous Car Bomb Cupcakes. A big hit this year, and the year before that, and the year before that. You're sure to be the hit of the party if you show up with 2 dozen of these in tow!

For the cupcakes:

1 c. Guiness (I used extra stout)

2 sticks unsalted butter

3/4 unsweetened cocoa

2 c. sugar

3 eggs

2/3 c. plain greek yogurt

2 c. flour

1.5 tsp baking powder

1.5 tsp. baking soda

3/4 tsp. salt

(pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees)

Step 1: simmer the Guiness and butter on medium heat until the butter melts, then add in the cocoa and stir until smooth

Step 2: in a small-medium bowl, add all of your dry ingredients (flour through salt)

Step 3: in a large bowl, gently mix the sugar, eggs and yogurt, then add in your stout/chocolate mix. beat on low until smooth.

Step 4: slowly (in ~1/4 c. increments) add in your dry ingredients and beat on medium-low until smooth.

Step 5: evenly distribute in 24 baking cups and bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean

For the buttercream:

(you can start this while your cupcakes are in the oven so you're ready to go when they're cool)

1 1/2 c. butter flavored Crisco (regular Crisco will work, too)

1/4 c. Bailey's Irish Cream

3-4 c. confectioner's sugar

1/4 c. milk

Step 1: beat the Crisco until smooth

Step 2: begin adding confectioner's sugar in 1/2 c. increments

Step 3: when half of the sugar has been added, add in your Bailey's. if it starts to stiffen or isn't looking creamy and smooth, add in your milk. the buttercream should be heavenly and creamy, not thick and stiff.

For the ganache:

8 oz dark chocolate baking bar, broken into pieces

2/3 c. heavy cream

2 tbs. unsalted butter

2 tbs. Jameson Irish Whiskey

(start this AFTER your cupcakes are out of the oven and have begun to cool)

Step 1: heat 1 c. of water in a pot, placing a glass bowl containing the chocolate immediately on top (or use a double boiler)

Step 2: when the chocolate is mostly melted, simmer your heavy cream until you see small bubbles, then pour it directly on top of your chocolate without stirring. let it set for 1 minute

Step 3: remove the pot from the heat (keeping the bowl above the pot) or turn the heat off on the double boiler. add in the butter and Jameson and stir until smooth.

Put it all together:

Once cooled, use a corer or knife and remove the center from your cupcakes. then, add a tablespoon (or so) of ganache to the center of each cupcake. This will congeal slightly over a few hours and be gooey and delicious once your guests bite into it.

You can add any food coloring you want to the buttercream, if any. It won't alter the flavor. Once its mixed in, use a piping bag or a Ziploc baggie with the corner cut off and pipe your frosting onto your cupcake!

SERVE AND ENJOY.

Note: cupcakes with a non-cooked dairy element (like cream cheese or meringue) should always be kept in the refrigerator. You should be ok with letting these sit out for a day or two, but refrigerate them after that to keep them fresh!
Why would we do this, you ask? To eat the most delicious soup in Pittsburgh, of course!

For the last 9 consecutive years, local businesses in the South Side have joined forces to offer one of the most anticipated events in the region: the South Side Soup Contest. Year after year, hundreds gather to trek up and down Carson Street in the dead of winter to get a taste of 24 different, piping-hot soups from South Side restaurants. The event benefits the Brashear Association's food pantry as well as participant's bellies.

While waiting in line, I turned to MM and said "I can't believe all of these people are this excited about soup..." to which the group behind us responded "SOUP IS THE BEST!" Well said, friends. Well said. We snagged our punch cards and went on to discover that they were, in fact, right... soup IS really and truly the best.

Our strategy was simple: treat it like an amusement park. That means hit up the farthest spots first and work our way back. We started walking from 28th street to make our way to 10th, when we heard a glorious sound. A bell announced the presence of the Pittsburgh's Green Gears Pedi Cabs. Locally owned and operated rickshaw's were offering free rides up and down Carson Street to anyone, soupers or no, who wanted to cover some ground! MM and I cozied up under a blanket and hit the road.

There were four categories in which we had to judge. MM and I each had our favorites:

Best Host
MM: Thick Bikes (cutest puncher, she says)
TOP: Commonwealth Press (they had cool t-shirts and cornhole. there was really no contest)
Official winner: UPMC Mercy (they had water, coffee, tea, and goodies. they had it in the bag. they also gave away bags.)

There were 24 stops on the tour and, in three hours, MM and I made it to 21. Each stop served up about 3 tablespoons of soup. That's 63 tablespoons of soup, almost four cups! On a chilly day with lots of walking, we were warm and satisfied!

The event cost $20, but the money goes to a good cause. Not only does the event benefit a great organization, but it brings people and attention to local businesses who truly deserve it. We tried soups from local restaurants while perusing local shops. And they seriously thought of everything. The tablecloths, soup spoons and mini-bowls were all biodegradable! Minimized waste, maximized fun.

It was a beautiful and wonderful day and I absolutely encourage you to mark your calendars for next year! One piece of advice: get there early. The registration line gets LONG!

Thank you, South Side Chamber of Commerce for putting on such a wonderful event year after year. Who knew soup could bring so many people together for such a wonderful cause.

Good morning, Pittsburgh!

Did you wake up hungry? Too early for lunch but too late for breakfast? Fear not, fellow foodies. I have the perfect solution: Brunch at Piper's Pub!

Not long ago, a fair-skinned, scarlet-haired friend K8 traveled west from the Big Apple to visit MM and I. We wanted to take her for a delicious meal and found it only appropriate to honor her roots and head somewhere Irish. Piper's Pub was the perfect place.

I've played soccer (ahem, excuse me, FOOTBALL) for as long as I can remember. One of my favorite things about this place is, no mater the season, there's a match on the telly. Not a fan of footie? No worries, the food will suffice.

We channeled our inner Irishmen and each ordered booze for breakfast. Give me one good reason why not?! Two bloody mary's and a Smithwick's found their ways to our table in no time. The bloody mary was smooth and delicious with just the right amount of kick.

After careful examination of Piper's surprisingly lengthy brunch menu, we all decided on what the Irish lovingly refer to as a Boxty, which when spoken in Gaelic tongue translates roughly to "poor house bread." Essentially, its a creative potato pancake, and the way Piper's approaches it, there's nothing "poor" about them.

K8 and MM both went for the Irish Boxty while I chose the Smoked Salmon Boxty.

The Irish Boxty consists of potato pancake, sausage (or "bangers"), ham, eggs and provolone cheese.

Irish Boxty, $9.95

The Smoked Salmon Boxty was filled with fresh salmon, sliced thin, and topped with cool cucumber shavings in a creamy dill sauce. Both were hearty, delicious and filling. My smoked salmon boxty was fresh and unique, the dill sauce was a perfect balance to the light, smoky flavor of the salmon.

Smoked Salmon Boxty, $9.95

if and when you're in the market for a refreshing pint, a thrilling

you, their boxties are brilliant. Piper's USED to only serve brunch on Sundays. Well, my friends, not
anymore. You can snag brunch Saturday OR Sunday these days. And I highly
recommend you do.
So obviously we picked the most romantic place we could find and headed to East Liberty to get our French on.

The moment we walked into Paris 66 we felt like we were transported to France (well, E1 and MM -whom you've met in previous posts) have been there, so they confirmed. To me, it felt like Paris in EPCOT, and that was good enough). We were greeted by baked goods and macaroons galore and the smell of fresh crepe batter filled the air.

The walls of the charming bistro are littered with Parisian trinkets and art. Even the chairs seemed French.

Here's a heads up: Paris 66 used to be BYOB. It's not anymore. But no matter, we were excited for French wine! We started with a nice Bordeaux. Not the best wine I've had, but it was Bordeaux. So I didn't whine about my wine.
...but I had one agenda for the evening and one agenda only: to get ESCARGOT. And I escar-got it. The parsley-anis infused butter sauce was completely out of this world. If you've never tried escargot, I encourage you to do so. It's like the slightly chewier cousin of calamari, with a more earthy aftertaste. Soak it in a butter sauce like Paris 66 and you've got shell-shucked heaven. Just writing this post makes me drool in anticipation of going back and snagging another order of those slippery little suckers (10 points for Pretty Woman reference).
E1 went for the Crevettes Provencales, or seafood linguini. Sauteed shrimp are tossed with linguini, fresh herbs, mushrooms and sundried tomatoes in a perfectly balanced white wine sauce to pull together this lovely Tuscan inspired dish.
MM channeled her inner Ramsay and went with the Beef Wellington and steamed asparagus. This was a PRW menu item and can't be found on their day-to-day menu, but should be. Her only complaint was that it could have use a touch more flavor, but the steak was cooked wonderfully!
LSpan, a F.O.R.T. I'm proud to finally introduce, decided on the Herb Crusted Salmon Salad. It was cooked just slightly over, but had great flavors and a nice sear. The crunchy pomme pailles (or "shoestring potatoes") gave the salad a nice assortment of textures.
In my attempt to keep my calorie count down after 3 glasses of wine and butter-soaked snails, I took a minimalist approach to my entree and went with the delicious Roasted Beet Caprese salad. Paired with heirloom tomatoes, red onions, buffalo mozzarella and a balsamic reduction, the beets truly shined. It was a truly unique spin on a beet salad and - despite the smaller size - I really did feel satisfied afterward. Maybe it was the wine.
Of course, no respectable foodie can visit an authentic French bistro and leave without trying the macaroons. We chose the salted caramel, Rose and Pistachio flavors. As you know, I'm forever and always a huge fan of any establishment that sources local ingredients. Paris 66 is one of them, and it makes me proud. The ambiance and general aura of this place is brilliant. I felt happy just sitting there. It was a completely perfect girls night and would make an even better romantic date night. The food was excellent as well. I've had crepes there months prior and they were also spot on. Both times I've visited Paris 66 I've been blown away. I can't wait to go back!
Forget the flowers, chocolate and candlelight. Cookie cutter dates are a thing of the past. While I (a foodie fanatic) am still a fan of the traditional fancy meal aspect of a date, I'm far from one to say it should be a snore. So, with the help of my Partner-In-Dine, we've come up with a TOP-five list of unique "Dinner and..." ideas for 'burgh-bound date nights - just in time for Valentine's Day!

We've been hearing quite a bit of buzz lately about the culinary innovations going on at Fukuda, so when we heard that it was participating in Pittsburgh Restaurant Week, we knew we had to check things out for ourselves.

I'll cut right to the chase (which, if you know me at all, is something of an exception to the norm). This place had its interesting share of ups and downs, but the food was - without a shred of a doubt - the up to rule all ups.

Initially, I'd tried to make reservations (well beyond a week in advance) for a group of six girls on a Friday. The girl I spoke with was very sweet when she told me they just didn't have room for us unless we wanted to eat at 9:45... which we did not. So I took PID on a Wednesday instead! As soon as we walked in, we immediately realized why six girls on a Friday was an impossibility. The restaurant is the very definition of quaint. A small front room scattered with no more than seven tables and a sushi bar is the extent of it. While there is room for a table of six, I suggest calling upwards of two weeks ahead to snag it on a weekend.

The decor was shabby chic, extremely interesting and inviting. I felt like I was at a friends' house and the hostess made us feel the same.

I'll quickly skim over a few of the "downs" I mentioned earlier, but PLEASE bare with me because - I swear to you - it gets much, MUCH better. I'm just doing my due diligence by sharing them with you. Necessary non sequiturs, if you will.

1) We had made the mistake of viewing an older menu on their website and checking out the photos of the menu we found on UrbanSpoon. While the choices were fairly similar, the prices have shot up exponentially since what I can only assume was October. I personally am not bothered by this. I understand inflation and supply and demand. They have been receiving a lot of good press and, if the demand for product is higher, so too shall be the prices. That said, I DO think that for the size, simplicity and young age of the restaurant, they are slightly overpriced. That said again... and you'll see this... the food is friggin' worth it.

2) We were seated for a good 12-15 minutes before anyone came to our table to take our drink order. Again, this is a seven table establishment. It shouldn't have been the case.

3) We made reservations and specifically went there to participate in Pittsburgh Restaurant Week. But when it came time to order, our server informed us that they were no longer offering the Restaurant Week Menu, because the chef wanted to change it. That was pretty disappointing. During Restaurant Week we wanted to...well...partake in Restaurant Week. Nonetheless, many of the items on that menu were still available individually, so we got to ordering.

We started with the Kusshi Oysters with Juniper shisho granita (shisho leaves have a slight cinnamon flavor to them and the Juniper gave it a nice floral twist!), thai chili, and fresh lemon. The granita and thai chili were completely perfect on the slippery oysters, but they were so small that I couldn't truly appreciate it like I would have loved to. Again, these flavors were SPOT. ON. But at $5 an oyster, I wasn't sure the price was.

Kusshi Oysters - $10

We also ordered a bowl of grilled edamame for the two of us. Here? I have negative zero complaints. I went into it thinking edamame was edamame. Boy was I wrong. Grill it with some sea salt and a touch of lemon? And you've got yourself one heck of a delicious (and healthy!) snack. PID had to smack my hand away a few times.
For our entrees we ordered a collection of two spicy tuna maki rolls, a tuna avocado maki roll, the Ramen we'd seen on the PRW menu, and the simmered pork belly. (And here is my very last "down," I promise) Though our servers were incredibly friendly, personable and available, the expediting in this place can use some work. PID became extremely frustrated with the great length of time that lapsed between each item that we ordered. I excused it, because the place is new and they were probably slightly overwhelmed with PRW, but I will say that two of us took 2.5 hours to eat a relatively small meal - and not by choice. Once they fall into step with their delivery, this place will be unstoppable.
The spicy tuna roll wins my TOP award for the best of the 'burgh. The tuna and avocado roll was delicious as well.
So I know I walked you through a roller coaster of an experience but here it is, my overall opinion. Sure it's a bit pricey for the portion size. Sure they had a few issues with their expediting. And sure we couldn't get the PRW menu we were promised. But when I left there I didn't care a lick. All I could think about, all I could DREAM about, was the sushi. And the pork belly. And the grilled edamame, and yes - even those $5 oysters.
Allow me be sappy for a moment. As the Winter 2013 Pittsburgh Restaurant Week came to a close, I couldn't help but think to myself how lucky we are to live in this town. Since I relocated to Pittsburgh in 2002, I've watched this region blossom into something of a culinary heartland...and I couldn't be happier. There are so many non-chain, locally owned gems at every corner of the city that it's seemingly impossible to be left wanting, no matter your mood.

We kicked off the week at one such place with the blogger dinner at Alma. We'd been there in the past and had mixed opinions, so PID and I were excited to give it another go.

It all started with a drink, as it so often does. PID went with a Jalepeno Gimlet (which - with its beautiful fusion of lime, jalepeno, cucumber, rose and gin - seemed to be the popular pick of the night with our fellow foodies) and I channeled my inner sorority girl with the Pisco Passion Martini which perfectly blended Pisco brandy and passionfruit juice.

Pisco Passion Martini - $8.50 and Jalepeno Gimlet - $10

When we finally sat down to dinner, we were greeted by Brian McCollum (one of the brilliant minds behind Restaurant Week), Alissa Matthews (of Buy Fresh, Buy Local), and the owners of Alma. We learned about the challenges and rewards behind being a latin-inspired restaurant with a locally sourced menu. I always feel a sense of pride when I learn that a local restaurant uses local ingredients, but I never put much thought into how it changes things from an operational perspective. Mad props, people. MAD props.
PID and I began with a few starters: the bread salad and Ceviche de Hongos.

Ceviche de Hongos - part of special PRW menu

My bread salad was phenomenal. It was really a unique combination of textures and flavors: cucumber, queso fresco, tomato, olives and bread croutons. The ceviche wasn't our favorite appetizer. It lacked a bit of depth and we wouldn't order it again.

We were inspired by the owners story about using local chickens and the adjustments the chefs had to make to learn to cook with leaner birds. Both of us ordered chicken entrees. PID with the Pollo Criollo en Cazuela and I with a regular menu item, the Seco de Pollo.

Seco de Pollo - $15

This is the part where all those stories about the difficulty of working with leaner chickens started to sound like rubbish... because both of our dishes were OUTSTANDING. The chicken fell right off the bone. I've never had chicken cooked so perfectly.

PID's Pollo Criollo was a cuban inspired creole dish cooked in citrus juices, sherry and herbs. My Seco de Pollo was braised in an aji and cilantro sauce and it was right up my alley.

We certainly enjoyed our trip back to Alma. It was great to meet more members of the Pittsburgh blogger world and learn more about operating a locally-sourced restaurant.

Big thanks to Pittsburgh Restaurant Week for making it all happen!

Why did I start a blog about Pittsburgh restaurants? Because, for a very long time, I couldn't cook. Ok, ok... so in reality I was too lazy to open a cook book or make an attempt to actually learn in my all-too-rare downtime. It was just plain easier to give PID the puppy eyes and beg to go to the newest hot spot and spend our hard-earned money, instead. But it's time to change all that...

Surprisingly, since I've started blogging restaurant reviews, I've matured my palate and developed an enhanced understanding and appreciation of flavor profiles and how to mix them. I can definitely feel my culinary skills emerging! But that's not to say there's not still a LOT of room for improvement.

Luckily one of my favorite local-sustainable restaurants has announced its 2013 schedule of cooking classes. Habitat has recently welcomed a new executive chef, Jason Dalling, and I'm totally pumped to see what he's got in store. There are a few in particular that I absolutely plan to attend and a few I'm definitely considering.

Overall Opinion:
In the wise words of a fellow fort, it's a trendy coffee shop with a drinking problem. And that's totally a good thing. We all felt the vibe in the place through the bubbly bartenders, personable patrons and charming decor. And, ya know, the booze weren't bad either. We shared a smooth South African Shiraz that I've dreamed about since. They also have artisan cheese and meat plates, an extensive tap list, and some yummy looking wine cocktails as well. It's great for drinks before dinner, a classy night out, the start of a fun crawl, or a casual first date. We'll definitely be back!

If I learned anything that night, it was that I handle a bottle better than I handle a bowling ball. But my F.O.R.T.s ain't half bad!
PID and I have been meaning to check out Point Brugge for years. So I feel it's only appropriate that we waited until the first major snow storm of 2012 to make the dangerous decision to drive there and do it.

All I have to say, is that the reward was worth the risk.

We arrived by the skin of our teeth while the snow was still falling. The restaurant is tucked away on a quiet Point Breeze side street. Don't blink, because you may miss it amongst the other Hastings houses!

Though the place was nearly packed despite the storm, we were greeted and seated the moment we walked in. We were celebrating the first night of our 10 consecutive days of freedom (we both had the entire holiday week off), so we ordered a few drinks right away.

They have a huge selection of wine and Belgian, artisan and standard beers. PID went with a Newcastle Brown Ale while I went with my standard Cab.

Moules with Red Curry Sauce (small portion) - $12

PID is a mussel fanatic (and a muscle fanatic, but that's another story), so we placed an order a pound of Moules in a red curry coconut sauce. The mussels were fresh and tasty, but that red curry sauce was out of this world. I could have drank it like soup. I didn't, but I could have.

Roasted Tomato and Spinach Dip - $9

We also made sure to snag an order of the roasted tomato and spinach dip, served with crostini and celery sticks. The roasted tomato was a brilliant addition to your average spinach dip. It added an entirely new depth of flavor to the dish. The dip was made with cream cheese which made it light and fluffy, as well.

Chipotle Hangar Steak (special, not on regular menu) - $20

As my entree, I ordered the daily special: a chipotle marinated hangar steak with a raspberry balsamic reduction, served on a bed braised kale, white beans and bacon. This dish was phenomenal. Chipotle can be an overpowering pepper when it comes to flavor profiles, but the balance was just right on my perfectly cooked portion. I made sure to cut it into tiny pieces so I could enjoy it as long as possible. The pleasant surprise of this dish, however, was definitely the bean salad. The braised kale and bacon complemented the beans perfectly to add a nice saltiness and brininess. I would order it on it's own in a heartbeat.

Steak Frites - $26 (add Blue Cheese - $2)

PID also opted for steak, going for the Steak Frites (aka - with fries) with Maytag Blue Cheese. I have a very special fiance. He gave me more than one bite. If you're anything like me, you can tell when Blue Cheese is of a finer quality. This certainly was. PID's fries were also crispy and hot, just the way he likes them.

Belgian Chocolate Mousse Cake - $8

I mentioned before that we were celebrating, and we didn't sell ourselves short. For the first time in a very long time, we ordered dessert. We had a Belgian triple chocolate cake. Even as I post this photo, the memory of this luscious, velvety cake has me salivating. The Belgian influence gave the cake bitter notes with the perfect amount of sweetness to make your mind tell you to stop while your taste buds beg you to keep eating.
Overall Opinion:
The food was impeccable, the service was amazing, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming - what's NOT to love about this place?! My parents travel to Brussels and Belgium every year as a tradition they started after I left the nest. I can't wait to take them here the next time they're in town to show them that they don't have to leave the country to get the most delicious and authentic Belgian cuisine they could ever want. It's right in our very own back yard. Date night, girls night, wine night, snowmageddon - any night of the year Point Brugge is the place to be.
